Want to discover one of the world's favorite countries? Here are some basic facts for the traveler in Spain

When to go
In general, late spring and late summer-early autumn are the best times for traveling in Spain. Fair weather is practically guaranteed, and the countryside is at its best.
High summer is stiflingly hot in most inland areas, including Madrid and the inland cities of Andalusia such as Seville and Córdoba. Big cities, especially Madrid, empty during August, with many shops and restaurants closing, though a visit then does have advantages, such as light traffic (you can even find a parking space).
Summer weather is milder along the Mediterranean coast, but July and August in popular resorts such as the Costa del Sol are best avoided unless you like crowds. Summer along the northern coast of Spain, from the Basque Country to Galicia, can be very pleasant.
Winters along the Mediterranean coast are generally mild, but expect occasional heavy rains - alternating with long spells of glorious sunshine - any time between October and April. In inland areas, winter temperatures can reach below freezing and snow is is not infrequent.
Bear in mind Spain's fiestas when planning a trip - be it to go to them, or to avoid them. During major fiestas such as the San Fermin bull runs in Pamplona or the April Fair in Seville, hotel rates double and even so rooms must be reserved months in advance.

Getting There
Practically all transcontinental flights land at Madrid's Barajas airport, so you will need to book an extra flight if you want to travel by air to another destination in Spain. Air fares between North America and Europe are highly competitive. You might find it cheaper to fly to Spain via another European country. Rates between Great Britain and any number of destinations in Spain are especially worth checking out.
Rail communications between the rest of Europe and Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia and Seville are very good. There are also regular ferries between southern England and northern Spain. Major cities in Spain are well connected to continental Europe and each other by motorway.

Entry Formalities
If you are a citizen of a European Union country, all you need to enter Spain is a national identity card. In the case of the United Kingdom, which does not issue such cards, you'll need a passport. Visas for stays of no longer than 90 days are not required for travelers from the United States, Canada, Australia or New Zealand, but South Africans do need to apply for a visa before they leave.

Language
A knowledge of Spanish will enrichen a trip to Spain, but you can get by perfectly well with English in the major destinations. Spaniards are in general friendly and tolerant towards foreign visitors.

Getting Around
Spain is a big country - the second largest in western Europe after France - so don't expect to "do Spain" in a week.
Flights between Spanish cities are frequent, but the fares tend to be high. Iberia, Spanair and Air Europa are the major operators.
Train service between the larger cities is excellent, and irreproachably punctual, but slower in the case of smaller regional cities. The bus is an inexpensive alternative.

Driving in Spain
Renting a car is a reasonably-priced option, and by far the best way to travel if you want to enjoy Spain's rich and varied countryside. The major international car hire firms operate in Spain; local companies usually charge somewhat cheaper rates. In any case, it is usually a better bet to reserve and pay for your rental car from home, before you leave.
To rent a car you have to be over 21 and have a valid driver's license. Your national license is valid for driving in Spain as a tourist.
Major roads are generally good, though traffic can be heavy on more popular routes, especially on weekends or during holiday periods. Local roads range from good and pleasant to hair-raisingly narrow and winding. Enquire locally before embarking on a driver to a distant village, and don't take a road just because it is a reassuring color on the road map.
Avoid driving in cities: it can be a nightmare experience, especially if you're unfamiliar with the city or with some of the quirkier local driving habits. Park in a guarded parking area, and take a taxi, which are very good value in Spain. In Madrid, it's worth familiarizing yourself with the excellent Metro (subway) system.

Money Matters
The official currency in Spain is the Euro
Credit cards are widely accepted in Spain, Visa and Masters more so than American Express or Diners. Provided you know your Personal Identification Number, you can use your card to withdraw cash from ATMs in Spain. Often, you'll find the rate of exchange is more favorable than if you go to a bank or exchange bureau. When exchanging money at a bank, avoid converting small amounts at a time, as the minimum commission charged can be prohibitive.
Most Spanish banks close in the afternoon, all day Saturday during summer, and all day Sunday year round.
Value added tax (IVA) is charged on purchases, at a rate of 16% for most goods and services (it is 7% for hotel accommodation). If you are resident of a non-European Union country, you can get a refund of this tax on purchases over 100 Euros in certain participating shops. The refund can be claimed at the airport customs office on your departure: you can either get cash there, or have them send a check to your home address or credit the amount to your credit card.

Staying in Touch
To call abroad from Spain, dial the international access code (00), then your country code (such as 1 for the US, 44 for Great Britain), then the number. If you have a phone card from your home company, you can place a call by dialing your company's access number in Spain:

ATT 900 990 011
MCI 900 990 014
Sprint 900 990 013
British Telecom 900 990 044

Mobile phones can be used in Spain provided they conform to the European GSM standard and the "roam" feature is activated.

Hotels
In general, hotels in Spain are comfortable and good value. Hotels in large cities such as Madrid and Barcelona are around twice the price as hotels elsewhere in Spain.
Hotels are rated from one to five stars, which gives a rough indication of their facilities, but not of the friendliness or efficiency of the service. Fodor's guide to Spain gives good, up-to-date information on hotels in the major Spanish destinations.
Hotels often offer good deals in slower periods, such as summer in Madrid. When phoning for a reservation, always ask for the room rate, and enquire regarding special offers. Spanish hotels do not normally require your credit card number to accept a reservation.
For more advice on choosing where to stay in Spain, see the article by Nick Inman on Hotels in Spain, and check our Guide to Hotels in Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada and Seville.

Electrical Current
The electrical current in Spain is 200 volts, 50 cycles AC. Plugs are of the continental type, with two round prongs. American appliances require a transformer and a plug adapter for use in Spain.

    Trip Cancellation & Hospital/Medical Insurances

    Your well being is key

When planning for a trip, insurance is the last thing most people think about. You are busy. There is the flight and accommodation to arrange, the activities to plan, and that new bathing suit to purchase.

No one ever plans on falling ill while on holiday, having to cancel a trip at last moment, or having their luggage lost. Unfortunately these things happen all too often. A travel insurance policy can reduce these risks to help ensure you have a worry-free vacation.

    INSURANCE TYPES

The two most common forms of coverage you should consider are trip cancellation insurance and hospital medical insurance. Trip cancellation coverage protects you from losing the deposit you have paid for your trip or the cost associated with cancelling your trip once you have departed. For visitors to Canada, excess hospital and medical coverage will pay for medical bills as hospitals in Canada can charge thousands of dollars per day.

Another consideration you may have is credit card insurance. We have created a list of questions and general facts to better inform and guide your decision.

Traveling in Canada - What to Know

    It's all in the details
From vibrant cities to outdoor adventures there are many types of travellers and experiences. Make the best of your trip, and keep our travel tips in mind when planning and taking your trip.

    HEALTH INFORMATION

No Vaccinations are required. Canadian hospitals and medical services are excellent. The vast majority of hospitals are publicly managed and rates are set by provincial and hospital authorities. Hospital care for non-residents of Canada is charged at a daily rate or on the basis of the medical condition and length of stay. Charges vary from province to province and from hospital to hospital, but generally range from $1,000 to $2,000 a day. So it's important to obtain travel health insurance before leaving home, since it's possible your regular health insurance does not include coverage outside your country of residence.

For more information visit: Health Canada

    DRIVING & VEHICLES

A Vehicle Licensing Fee (VLF) and an Airport Concession Fee Recovery (CFR) are included in the rental rate as have Government surcharges and taxes. Optional items such as refueling, additional personal insurance or additional authorized driver (AAD) fees are extra and payable locally. Drop fees are also payable locally, ask your travel agent for the approximate drop charge applicable to your reservation. Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) is approximately $25.00 a day, check your automobile policy. Rates cannot be combined with any other offer, discount or promotion. Hertz standard age, driver, and credit applications apply. Rates include unlimited mileage at participating locations. Drivers must be 25 years of age and present a valid national or international drivers license, a return airline ticket and the Hertz car rental confirmation number. A credit card in the driver's name is also required.

    Driving Laws
Canadians drive on the right side of the road (same as the U.S.) and use the metric system for distances and speeds, kilometres/hour rather than miles. Traffic in both directions MUST stop when school buses have their red lights flashing (this means children are getting off and on the bus). At a 4-Way-Stop intersection the first vehicle at the intersection has right-of-way. You must have a valid driving license and auto insurance to drive a vehicle in Canada. A driving license from any country is valid for the first three months, while an International Driving Permit (available in your home country) can be used for one year. Seatbelts are mandatory for drivers and passengers in Canada, except in the Northwest Territories and Yukon.

    Border Crossing
Bringing a vehicle across the border into Canada is generally routine. If customs permits are required, they will be issued at the time of entry. Visitors driving rental cars should have a copy of the rental agreement in the vehicle at all times, endorsed for entry into Canada.

    CUSTOMS & dUTIES

Passports are required except for US Citizens who may use a photo I.D. with an original or certified copy of your Birth Certificate. This must be carried to confirm U.S. citizenship when re-entering. Visas may be required depending on a client's citizenship. A visitor to Canada may bring the following into Canada duty-free: necessary personal items, including clothing: up to 50 cigars; 200 cigarettes; 1 kg. (2.2 lbs) tobacco; and 1.1 liters (40 oz) of spirits or wine, or, in lieu, 24 x 355 ml (12 oz) cans or bottles of beer or ale. Gift packages may be sent from Canada to another country duty and tax free if the item is $50 or less. It is illegal to bring revolvers, pistols and fully automatic firearms into Canada.

For more information visit: Canada Border Services Agency

    TAXES & TIPPING

    Tipping
Generally, restaurant bills do not include a tip or service charge. It is standard practice to tip your server 15% of the total bill before taxes. Service personnel at fast food outlets do not expect tips however it is standard practice to tip barbers, hairdressers, and taxi drivers 10 - 15% of your total bill. The customary gratuity to tour guides and motorcoach drivers is $3.00 - $5.00 per day, per person.

    Taxes
Provincial Sales Tax "PST" will be added to the advertised price of consumer products, as well as restaurant meals and beverages, except in provinces that have no Provincial Sales Tax. The applicable rate of Provincial Sales Tax varies from province to province. In addition, a Federal Goods and Services Tax "GST" will be added to virtually every transaction for consumer goods and service within Canada. This Federal tax is currently 6%. In Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Newfoundland, a harmonized Sales Tax "HST" of 14% (6% GST 8% provincial component) is charged on goods and services. (Note that in Québec and Prince Edward Island only, the GST is included in the provincial sales tax base).

Ciao Italy Travel's Guide to Rome

Rome, the eternal city, is filled with the air of past, present, and future. Fashionable Italians on their Vespa motor scooters crowd the streets of Via Veneto and Via Condotti amid a backdrop of broken marble columns and temple ruins. Yes, you are standing in Rome, the center of the Roman Empire some 2000 years ago. Rome managed to gracefully weave its past with today's engineering, fashion, and character, making it a vibrant city attracting visitors worldwide.

Aside from time-tested, breathtaking sites like the Colosseum, Pantheon, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Trevi Fountain, Rome is the nation's capital and serves as a major nexus of European business. As a result, global corporations have headquarters in this city alongside government offices and embassies.

Top 10 Things to See in Rome

Piazza di Spagna & Spanish Steps

Piazza di Spagna is the most famous square in Rome. Shaped like a crooked bow tie and surrounded by muted, shuttered facades, Piazza di Spagna draws crowds nonstop during the day year-round and well into the night in summer. The steps were built in the 1720s to link the square with the French church of Trinita' dei Monti.

    Trevi Fountain

Nicola Salvi's theatrical design for Rome's largest and most famous fountain was completed in 1762. The central figures are Neptune, flanked by two Tritons, one trying to master an unruly seahorse, the other leading a quieter beast, symbolizing the two contrasting moods of the sea.

    The Vatican

Vatican City, the world capital of Catholicism, is the world's smallest state. It occupies 106 acres within high walls tended by the Vatican Guards. It was the site where St Peter was martyred and buried, and it became the residence of the popes who succeeded him. The Papal palaces, next to the great basilica of St. Peter's, are home to the Sistine Chapel, the eclectic collections of Vatican museums, and, of course, the Pope.

    Trastevere

Trastevere is a picturesque old quarter whose inhabitants consider themselves to be the only true Romans. The proletarian identity of this site slowly transforms each year due to the growth of nearby trendy restaurants, clubs, and shops.

    Colosseum

Rome's greatest amphitheatre was commissioned by Emperor Vespasian in 72 CE. Deadly gladiator combats and wild animal fights were staged by emperors and wealthy citizens, most likely to gain popularity. Slaughter proliferated: at the inaugural games in 80 CE, over 9,000 wild animals were killed. The Colosseum could hold up to 55,000 people, seated according to rank.

    Roman Forum

In the early Republic, the Forum was a chaotic place with food stalls, brothels, temples, and the Senate House. By the 2nd century CE, it was decided that Rome required a more salubrious center, and the food stores were replaced by business centers and law courts. The Forum remained the ceremonial center of the city under the Empire, with succeeding emperors renovating old buildings and erecting new temples and monuments.

    Piazza Navona and Surroundings

No other Piazza in Roma can rival the theatricality of Piazza Navona. The luxurious cafes are the social center of the city. Day and night there is always something going on in the pedestrian area around the flamboyant Baroque fountains. The Baroque is also represented in many of the area's churches. To discover an older Rome, walk along Via del Governo Vecchio to admire the facades of Renaissance buildings, browse in the fascinating antiques shops, and lunch in one of many trattorias. Rome's most beautiful Baroque piazza follows the shape of a 1st century CE stadium built by Domitian, which was used for athletic contests. Until the 19th century, the piazza was flooded in August by stopping the fountain outlets. The rich would splash around in carriages, while street urchins paddled.

    Pantheon

The maze of narrow streets around the Pantheon is a mixture of lively restaurants, cafes, and some of Rome's finest sights. This is also the city's financial and political district, home to Parliament and other governmental offices. The Pantheon itself, with its awe-inspiring domed interior, has long been a symbol of the city. The Pantheon, the Roman "Temple of all Gods," is the most extraordinary and best-preserved ancient building in Rome.

    Castel Sant'Angelo

The massive fortress of Castel Sant'Angelo takes its name from the vision of the Archangel Michael by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century as he led a procession across the bridge, praying for the end of the plague.

The castle began life in 139 CE as the emperor Hadrian's mausoleum. Since then it has been a bridgehead in the Emperor's Aurelian city wall, a medieval citadel and prison, and a place of safety for Popes during times of political unrest. A corridor links it with the Vatican Palace, providing an escape route for the Pope.

    Palatine

The Palatine, once the residence of emperors and aristocrats, is the most pleasant of Rome's ancient sites. The ruins range from the simple house in which Augustus is thought to have lived, to the Domus Flavia and Domus Augustana, the public and private wings of a luxurious palace built by Domitian.

Traveling Safely with Infants and Children

    Introduction

The number of children who travel or live outside their home countries has increased dramatically. An estimated 1.9 million children travel overseas each year. Health issues related to pediatric international travel are complex, reflecting varied activities, exposures, and age-specific health risks. While some travel health concerns are similar for children and adults, international pediatric travelers have unique problems because of variable immunity and different age-based behavior; for example, a newly mobile toddler will have different health risks than a sexually active adolescent. Furthermore, many travel-related vaccinations and preventive medications used for adults are not licensed or recommended for pediatric use.

Although data about the incidence of pediatric illnesses associated with international travel are limited, studies of pediatric travelers have reported serious morbidity and mortality. The most common reported health problems are diarrheal illnesses, malaria, and motor vehicle- and water-related accidents. Children who are visiting family and relatives living in developing countries are at high risk for a variety of travel-related health problems, including malaria, intestinal parasites, and tuberculosis. In addition, travelers visiting friends and relatives are less likely to seek pre-travel preventive care. Adults and older children should consider taking a course in basic first aid prior to travel.

Clinicians should obtain a complete assessment of travel-related activities and provide preventive counseling and interventions tailored to specific risks. Adults traveling with young children should be counseled to monitor the children carefully for signs of illness. Irritability may be a response to changes in time zone and environment but may also indicate illness in young children. Excessive or persistent irritability, fevers, or signs of dehydration should be evaluated promptly. Children with chronic diseases or immunocompromising conditions require travel preparations and treatment tailored to their specific underlying condition.

    Diarrhea and Dehydration

Diarrhea and associated gastrointestinal illness are among the most common travel-related problems affecting children (1). Young children and infants are at high risk for diarrhea and other food- and waterborne illnesses because of limited pre-existing immunity and behavioral factors such as frequent hand-to-mouth contact. Infants and children with diarrhea can become dehydrated more quickly than adults.

    PREVENTION

Causes of Travelers’ Diarrhea (TD) in children are similar to those in adults (see Chapter 4). For young infants, breastfeeding is the best way to reduce the risk of foodborne and waterborne illness. Travelers should use only purified water for drinking, preparing ice cubes, brushing teeth, and mixing infant formula and foods. Scrupulous attention should be paid to handwashing and cleaning pacifiers, teething rings, and toys that fall to the floor or are handled by others. When proper handwashing facilities are not available, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer can be used as a disinfecting agent. However, alcohol does not remove organic material; visibly soiled hands should be washed with soap and water.

Travelers should ensure that dairy products are pasteurized. Fresh fruits and vegetables must be adequately cooked or washed well and peeled without recontamination. Bringing finger foods or snacks (self-prepared or from home) will reduce the temptation to try potentially risky foods between meals. Meat, fish and eggs should always be well cooked and eaten just after they have been prepared. Travelers should avoid food from street vendors.

MANAGEMENT OF DIARRHEA IN INFANTS AND YOUNG CHILDREN

Adults traveling with children should be counseled about the signs and symptoms of dehydration and the proper use of World Health Organization oral rehydration solutions (ORS). Immediate medical attention is required for an infant or young child with diarrhea who has signs of moderate to severe dehydration (Table 8-1), bloody diarrhea, fever higher than 38.5° C (101.5° F), or persistent vomiting. ORS should be provided to the infant by bottle or spoon while medical attention is being obtained.

    Assessment and Treatment of Dehydration

The greatest risk to the infant with diarrhea and vomiting is dehydration. Fever or increased ambient temperature increases fluid losses and speeds dehydration. Parents should be advised that dehydration is best prevented and treated by use of ORS, in addition to the infant’s usual food (Table 4-20). Rice and other cereal-based ORS, in which complex carbohydrates are substituted for glucose, are also available and may be more acceptable to young children. Adults traveling with children should be counseled that sports drinks, which are designed to replace water and electrolytes lost through sweat, do not contain the same proportions of electrolytes as the solution recommended by WHO for rehydration during diarrheal illness.

ORS packets are available at stores or pharmacies in almost all developing countries. [See information below regarding ORS availability in the United States.] ORS is prepared by adding one packet to boiled or treated water. Travelers should be advised to check packet instructions carefully to ensure that the salts are added to the correct volume of water. ORS solution should be consumed or discarded within 12 hours if held at room temperature or 24 hours if kept refrigerated. A dehydrated child will drink ORS avidly; travelers should be advised to give it to the child as long as the dehydration persists. An infant or child who vomits the ORS will usually keep it down if it is offered by spoon in frequent small sips.

Children weighing less than 10 kilograms who have mild to moderate dehydration should be administered 60-120 mL ORS for each diarrheal stool or vomiting episode. Children who weigh 10 kg or more should receive 120-240 mL ORS for each diarrheal stool or vomiting episode. Severe dehydration is a medical emergency that usually requires administration of fluids by IV or intraosseous routes.

    Other Measures

Parents should be particularly careful to wash hands well after diaper changes for infants with diarrhea to avoid spreading infection to themselves and other family members.

Oral syringes that are available in most pharmacies for oral medications can be useful for the administration of ORS and can be included as part of the travelers’ health kit for young children.

The use of antimotility agents (e.g., loperamide, lomotil) in children younger than 2 years of age is not recommended. Because overdoses of these types of drugs can be fatal, they should be used with extreme caution in children. Side effects of these drugs in adults include opiate-induced ileus, drowsiness, and nausea. Lomotil has been associated with fatal overdoses and other severe complications, including coma and respiratory depression. Antinausea medications, such as promethazine and prochlorperazine, are not routinely recommended. They are contradicated for use in children less than 2 years of age. Fatal respiratory depression in children has been reported with use of promethazine. Children with an acute illness, including gastroenteritis and dehydration, are more susceptible to neuromuscular reactions, especially dystonias, associated with prochlorperazine, than adults. The extrapyramidal side effects associated with these medications can be confused with symptoms of other undiagnosed primary diseases associated with vomiting, such as Reye syndrome. These medications should not be routinely prescribed as empiric treatment for children with possible TD. Adults traveling with children should be fully counseled about the indications, dosage, frequency and possible side effects if these medications are prescribed.

    Antibiotics

Few data are available regarding empiric administration of antibiotics for TD in children. Furthermore, the antimicrobial options for empiric treatment in children are limited. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP/SMX) was previously used for empiric treatment of TD in children; however, its effectiveness has been reduced by widespread drug resistance and it is no longer routinely recommended. Fluoroquinolones are frequently used for the empiric treatment of TD in adults. The use of fluoroquinolones is not generally recommended for use in children and adolescents less than 18 years of age because of cartilage damage seen in animals tested. The only indication for fluoroquinolone use in children that has been approved by the Federal Drug Administration is for complicated urinary tract infections. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests some special circumstances for fluoroquinlone use, including the treatment of gastrointestinal infection caused by multidrug-resistant Shigella species, Salmonella species, Vibrio cholerae, or Campylobacter jejuni. Although not FDA-approved, some travel medicine advisors have reported using 1-3 days of ciprofloxacin for treatment of TD in some older children. However, the routine use for empiric treatment for TD is not recommended. Tetracyclines can cause teeth staining if used in children less than 8 years of age (3).

In some studies, azithromycin has been found to be as effective as fluoroquinolones in treating TD in adults (4). In practice, some clinicians prescribe azithromycin either as a single dose or at 10 mg/kg for 3-5 days for empiric treatment. Flavored oral suspension of azithromycin is available. The suspension does not require refrigeration; however, it should be used within 10 days of mixing. The unreconstituted form of azithromycin has a longer expiration period. In certain circumstances, the unreconstituted form can be provided with clear instructions for preparation and may be useful for children traveling for longer than 10 days.

    Travel Insurance

If an illness, accident, or sudden change in plans forces you to cancel or interrupt your trip, you face two major financial losses: (1) money you’ve invested in nonrefundable prepayments and (2) medical expenses that aren’t covered by your health insurance. That’s why more and more travelers are turning to travel insurance to protect their investment. Too expenisve you think? Not really! The cost of travel insurance is based on the value of your trip. The more you have invested in your trip, the more you need to protect it. Travel insurance covers you for losses caused by trip cancellation and interruption, medical expenses, baggage loss, and trip and baggage delay. When you consider all the protection you get, travel insurance is actually a great value.

There are hundreds of circumstances that could cause you to cancel your trip, return home early or force you to seek emergency medical treatment while traveling. To demonstrate the importance of purchasing travel insurance, and emergency services, here are 10 common examples of what could go wrong.

    • It's 10 p.m. and your family arrives at the airport for a connecting flight, only to find that your flight has been cancelled. How do you get your family home?
    • Your traveling companion's bag was lost with his insulin inside. He needs help to locate his bag as soon as possible and his emergency prescription filled. Who do you call?
    • Your first visit to Europe, and your passport and wallet are stolen. Where do you turn for emergency cash, and how will you get your passport replaced?
    • Your spouse is involved in an accident and adequate medical treatment is not available. Who will help arrange and pay for a medical evacuation?
    • If your sister-in-law becomes seriously ill and you choose to cancel your trip, what happens to your non-refundable deposits or pre-payments?
    • You arrive in Jamaica and your luggage doesn't. If it's lost, who will help you find it? If it's delayed, who will pay for your necessities? If it's stolen, who will pay to replace it?
    • Your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt. Who will pay for your non-refundable expenses? Who will help get you to your destination?
    • You're walking down a street in Rio and twist your ankle. Who can help you find an English-speaking physician?
    • Three weeks before your scheduled arrival, a terrorist incident occurs in the city to which you are planning to visit. Who will pay if you want to cancel your trip?
    • You are at a beach resort in North Carolina, and you are forced to evacuate due to an approaching hurricane. Who will help you evacuate and who will reimburse your lost vacation?

    Greece

A land where sacred monasteries are mountainside fixtures, three-hour sea-side siestas are standard issue, and dancing on tables until daybreak is a summer rite: Greece's treasures are impossibly varied. Renaissance men long before their time, the ancient Greeks sprung to prominence with their philosophical, literary, artistic, and athletic mastery. Millennia later, school kids still dream of Hercules and the Medusa; when those kids grow up, they hanker after Greece's island beaches, free-flowing booze, and the gorgeous natural landscape, which was once the playground of a pantheon of gods. The all-encompassing Greek lifestyle is a frustrating and delicious mix of high speed and sun-inspired lounging, as old men hold lively debates in town square, young kids zoom on mopeds around the clock, and unpredictable schedules force a go-with-the-flow take on life.

June through August is high tourist season in Greece . Bar-studded beaches set the scene for revelry and Dionysian indulgence, as the hundred-degree sun blazes over ancient cities and modem-day sun-worshipers alike. Hotels, domatia, clubs, and sights are, like the nightlife, in full swing. If the crowds or the frantic pace of summer travel grate on you, consider visiting during May, early June, or September, when gorgeous weather smiles on thinner crowds. Avid hikers can take advantage of the mellower weather to traverse the unsullied expanses of Northern and Central Greece . In ski areas, winter brings another high season: you can hit the slopes at Mountain Parnassos, Mountain Pelion, or Metsovo.

The low season, from October through May, generally has cheaper airfares, lodging, and food prices, but many sights and accommodations have shorter hours or close altogether. At this time of year Greece hibernates, resting from summertime farming, fishing, and tourism. Ferries, buses, and trains run considerably less frequently, and life is quieter.

Mountain chains, bougainvillea-speckled islands, silver-green olive groves, and the stark contrast of other land against the azure Aegean comprise the Greek landscape, the refuge of mythological beasts. This varied land of isolated villages, jasmine-scented islands, and majestic ruins satisfies even the pickiest visitor with its infinite diversions. Don't be afraid to plot out your own route: the famous Greek hospitality will make you feel welcome wherever you go.

As the birthplace of drama, democracy, and western philosophy, Greece's long history has left a wealth of sites in its impressive wake. The mother of all ruins, the Acropolis, still presides over modem Athens . The gigantic, perfectly proportioned colunms of the Parthenon, combined with the sun's beating rays and the brilliant gleam of white marble, conjures up the same awe inspired in a millennia of worshipers and pilgrims. A voyage through the Peloponnese will transport you back to the era of nymphs, satyrs, and gods in disguise. Take a lap around the well-preserved stadium on the way to the original Olympic fields at Ancient Olympia, peer into Agamemnon's tomb at Mycenae , or experience catharsis after watching the performance of an ancient tragedy in the magnificent theater at Epidavros. Byzantine times stand still at the extensive city-site of Mystras, the former locus of Constantinople's rule in the Peloponnese .

On the mainland, get to "know thyself" at the ancient Oracle of Delphi. Chase after the floating island of Delos , birthplace of Apollo and Artemis, for a peek at the Temple of Apollo and an island wide archaeological site. More archaeological sites include: Heinrich Schliemman's reconstruction of the Minoan palace at Knossos ; an untarnished Minoan site at Phaistos; Santorini's Akrotiri, a city frozen in time by a volcanic eruption; onetime cult capital Paleopolis on Samothraki; and the dual ruins of Pella and Vergina in Northern Greece , frequented by Philip II and his son Alexander the Great. From Rhodes , you can reach the renmants of three of the seven wonders of the ancient world by daytrip. The Colossus of Rhodes leaves no trace today, though you can contemplate what its giant leg span must have been.

In Greece's summertime schedule, beach-side days melt through spectacular sunsets into starry, disco-filled nights, in a continuum of hedonistic delight. Roll out of bed and onto the beach around noon; nap in the late afternoon after strenuous sunbathing; head for a harbour side dinner at 11pm; throw back after-dinner drinks, catch a movie, or hit the clubs until 5am, all under the stars; watch the sun rise over the ocean; and hit the hay before another sun-drenched day. It's nearly impossible to resist the allure of Greek sun and sea. The islands have long been a sun worshiper's paradise, from Apollo's followers to disciples of Coppertone. As soon as you sail from Athens to the Saronic Gulf Islands , the roasting Greek sun will bronze your (entire) body and release your inhibitions. A favourite of international vacationers, Skiathos in the Sporades harbours the piney Biotrope of Koukounaries beach and magical Lalaria.

In the Aegean Sea , Santorini's blacksand beaches soak up the sun's hot rays and stay warm long after the stunning sunsets over the Sea of Crete have faded. Swim below sea caves once ransacked by pirates on the coast of Skyros or bask on the Lesvian shore, where beaches stretch out for miles from Sappho's home of Skala Eressou. Stumble out of all those superfluous clothes at Mykonos's wild, nude Super Paradise Beach . If your eyes get tired of all those bare backsides, seek solace on a secluded strip of sand. The much-beloved haunt of booze-loving backpackers, Corfu , is ringed by fabulous beaches on all sides, in addition to hosting that legendary party haven, the Pink Palace . Snorkel, water-ski, or just loaf in the sun on Ios and Naxos . Perfect your tan around Paleohora in Crete or at castle-crowned Haraki Beach in Rhodes .

Greece isn't just Athens , islands, bars, and babes. If you have enough self-discipline to tear yourself away from the fun in the sun, you'll soon realize that a wilderness experience can be just as invigorating. To do so, you'll have to either bust out your walking stick or rev up your engines. Hiking or motorbiking-or a combination of the two-lets you cruise between rural villages independent of constantly changing bus schedules. On foot, you'll cross through foothills draped with olive groves, passing mountain goats and wildflowers along the way. Drowsy Dimitsana and cobblestoned Stemnitsa distinguish themselves from the tourist bustle ofthe rest of the Peloponnese .

In the Ionian Sea , Odysseus's kingdom of Ithaka is an untapped hiker's paradise, where the Cave of the Nymphs-the hiding place for Odysseus's treasure and the conclusion of an enthralling hike-will seduce you. Northern Thassos is full of secluded ruins, superior hikes, and village-to-village strolls. Rural Alonnisos, a largely uninhabited island in the Sporades , is crisscrossed by trails and moped-friendly roads, and hugged by beaches ideal for refueling after a fatiguing hike. Outlying islands are protected as part of the National Marine Park and make for a pleasant daytrip.

The untouched traditional Greek villages of the Zagorohoria and their surrounding wilderness make walking an adventure. The neighboring Vikos Gorge, the world's steepest canyon, challenges hikers with a six-hour-Iong trek. You can explore more gorgeous gorges in Crete : the Samaria Gorge, Europe's longest gorge, and the quieter Valley of Death plunge you below eagles' nests and trees clinging to the steep canyon sides.

Eighty percent of the Greek landscape is mountainous, to the delight of climbers. Clamber to the abode of the gods at Mt. OIympus , ascending over 2900 steep, stunning meters to one of its eight peaks. During the summer, Dionysus's old watering hole, Mt. Parnassos , makes a great hiking and mountain-biking trip; in winter, skiers storm the 2400m slopes. The trails around Zaros in Crete wind up to mountainside sanctuaries and to Zeus's childhood hiding place, Kamares Cave .

    Geogrephical Information

Greece is the southern portion of a great peninsula of Europe, washed on three sides by the Mediterranean Sea. The name of Greece was not used by the inhabitants of the country. They called their land HELLAS, and themselves HELLENES. The names of GREECE and GREEKS come to us from the Romans, who gave the name of GRAECIA to the country and of GRAECI to the inhabitants.

The two northerly provinces of Greece are THESSALY and EPIRUS, separated from each other by Mount Pindus. Thessaly is a fertile plain enclosed by lofty mountains, and drained by the river Peneus, which finds its way into the sea through the celebrated Vale of Tempe. Epirus is covered by rugged ranges of mountains running from north to south, through which the Achelous the largest river of Greece, flows towards the Corinthian gulf.

In entering central Greece from Thessaly the road runs along the coast through the narrow pass of Thermopylae, between the sea and a lofty range of mountains. South of Phocis is Boeotia, which is a large hollow basin, enclosed on every side by mountains, which prevent the waters from flowing into the sea. Thebes was the chief city of Boeotia. West of Attica, towards the isthmus, is the small district of MEGARIS. The western half of central Greece consists of WESTERN LOCRIS, AETOLIA and ACARNANIA.

Central Greece is connected with the southern peninsula by a narrow isthmus, on which stood the city of Corinth. The mountains of Peloponnesus have their roots in the centre of the country, from which they branch out towards the sea. This central region, called ARCADIA, is the Switzerland of the peninsula. It is surrounded by a ring of mountains, forming a kind of natural wall, which separates it from the remaining Peloponnesian states.

The other chief divisions of Peloponnesus were Achaia, Argolis, Laconia, Messenia, and Elis. ACHAIA is a narrow slip of country lying between the northern barrier of Arcadia and the Corinthian gulf. LACONIA and MESSENIA occupied the whole of the south of the peninsula from sea to sea: these two countries were separated by the lofty range of Taygetus, running from north to south, and terminating in the promontory of Taenarum (now Cape Matapan), the southernmost point of Greece and Europe.

South of Euboea was the group of islands called the CYCLADES, lying around Delos as a centre; and east of these were the SPORADES, near the Asiatic coast and southern the island group of Dodecanese.
